The number of accidents the MD-11 has had is well within the normal probability distribution, so can't be considered as anything other than random events. There have been several MD-11 accidents (but were they related to the airframe or just bad luck?), but the aircraft has small enough total numbers and because it's long haul the cycles are low so the stats get pushed out of whack easily. You do have to consider the payload, for example, a B-737 burns less than an MD-11, but does that mean it's more fuel efficient? Bet you'd be surprised if you divided the payload by the fuel flow.Īs to the stats, those are based on the number of cycles. I would wager the L1011 burns 18,000/hr and carries a lot less payload.
